This bike started life as a 1961 Western Flyer 26" Tank Style-bike. I picked this up on E bay, intending on restoring it for myself. But, father's Day was approaching and I had no clue what to get my dad- someone who has everything he wants or needs. My mom saw the bike in progress in my garage, and commented on how it looked very similar to one my dad had as a child....so, I had the gift!
It was stripped to bare metal, and sent to the body shop. The colors are 2006 Mazda RX-8 Velocity Red and Performance White, base/ clearcoat. The following parts came from Lovely Lowriders:Half-moon bars and Red Sparkle grips, headset, flamed crash-rail web spring seat, one-piece crank, bottom bracket set, pedals, flamed chain-ring, chrome chain, gangster wide whitewall 26 x 2.125 tires, American flag bell, Bullet valve stem caps. Self-sealing tubes came from the local bike shop. The Shimano Nexus 7 hub with Rapid Fire Shifter and front and rear wheel set came from Electra. The battery box was refurbished, the front headlamp housing stripped of chrome and painted to match the tank. Even the lens was intact! Dad's name made it onto the chainguard, and in tribute to the paint colors, ZOOM on the tank!
It's not a wild custom, but rides like a dream. The joy of watching my dad as he saw his "new" bike was well worth the time and money.
Of course, Mom has "placed her order" and her's is now in progress for her upcoming September birthday.
Thanks for a great place to show off our labors of love.
