The klub runs solely on monies raised by the kids, and the kindness of our great sponsors. We are always looking for donations and interesting projects, right now we desperately want some 70's banana bikes to restore and mildly customize, can any of you help??? Meet Bernice MacNaughton High School's BIKE KLUB |
In the fall of 2004, a unique after-school program was started at an inner-city high school in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. The high school is Bernice MacNaughton High School and the after-school program is simply called, Bike Klub. The klub is conducted after regular school hours and is a referral and voluntary intake program. The kids pay a small fee, to cover a small amount of the costs associated with running the klub. They meet four times a week, twice a week during lunch hour to make decisions and get updated on klub news and twice a week after school to work on the bikes. Basically, they build custom bicycles, restore antique bicycles, build custom pull wagons and restore antique pull wagons. Just recently, some of the kids have made the jump to motorcycles as the klub attempts its first custom, from scratch, motorcycle build. |

Marc Mazerolle is the teacher/supervisor of the klub. He started the klub because he wanted to contribute to extra-curricular activities at his school but didn't want to coach a sports team or an academic club. His passion lay in bicycles and motorcycles and building his blue bicycle, "Wendy", was a way to learn the basics of building a motorcycle. Two grade nine students asked if they could stay after school to help, then more asked and before you know it, they were a klub. The klub has built "Wendy", a nine-foot-long full-custom chopper-style bicycle with two-tone paint, 60 degrees of rake and 11 inches of trail!! She gained some noterity in Canada appearing in a couple of motorcycle magazines and newspapers. The klub was invited to attend the Canadian Championships of Custom Bike Building in Alberta Canada in 2006. They brought Wendy with them to great reviews!! It was at that show that they were challenged to build a custom motorcycle by a motorcycle parts supplier, with the donation of a frame.

The klub also built a memorial bicycle for Indian Larry, a custom motorcycle builder who died in 2005. The bike started life as a 1967 JC Higgins single-speed coaster brake machine. With some restoration, some custom added touches of a "bobbed" rear fender, Ape Hanger bars, a "faux" gas tank and kick ass custom paint job, "Larry" is a crowd favorite with his PPG Viberace II Key Lime Green and 24 karot gold metal flake with purple accents ending off with a handbuilt IL question mark logo made from aluminum, the bike was approved by the Indian Larry Legacy and they even consulted with the kids to define what kind of bike Larry would have ridden, if he rode a bicycle. |

The kids have also restored a 1970 SuperCycle, a 1959 CCM 3 speed and an old (not sure the year) Raleigh. The second from-scratch build had us building another long bike! This one is a little over 8 feet long but a different style, it's a full custom with a sweeping cradle section a triple tree front end from a Sting Ray and the tail from a Sting Ray, it's called "Darkside" and she is flat black with some killer hand laid pinstipping by Corie "Lowshow" McKinnon. This bike also features "V" braking but since the handle is located just left of the rider's butt, we call it "suicide braking".

"J's Ride", recent project. |
Our current custom bicycle build is inspired by board track racers from the 20's- both bicycle and motorcycle; she started life as a 70's Raleigh easy step but has had some major customs done. The back bone was bent and welded into place, gussets made and installed, the seat stays were cut and bent like a 30's-style bicycle and one of the down tubes for the easy step was cut midway and a lower lateral put in to make a cradle for the "gas tank", then a full metal gas tank was cut and welded. Jesse James Huffy cap and bars, flipped upside down of course, top off the bike. An old CCM seat was covered by one of the kids and it gives it an ol' skool kool look.

Our motorcycle (not that many of you would be interested- this is a bicycle mag after all!!) Is a 55-inch, standard rear tire, 30 degrees of rake zero stretch Paugcho frame with a 114 Merch Fatso motor, 6-speed Ultima tranny, 3.25 wide open belt primary, Performance Machine front brakes with an Exile Sprotor Kit for the back brakes. A Corbin "Bobber" seat, Avon Gangster Wide White Wall tires and a "Bug's Eye" headlight are just a few of the custom touches on this machine. The kids hand built the oil tank, rear and front fenders and every bracket and perch on the bike. She will be painted the deepest shade of charcol grey as possible and hand pinstripped by LowShow McKinnon.
